Hapkido was first used by a group of Korean nationals in the period after the Japanese colonial era of Korea. Choi Yong Sul and his students; Suh Bok Sub, who was the first student of art, Ji Han Jae promoter of the art, Kim Moo Hong, Myung Jae Nam who forged the connection between the art of hapkido and aikido Japanese and later founded Hankido were responsible and given credit for developing Hapkido. Hapkido practitioners try to gain advantage over their opponents with to movements and body positioning to leverage, avoiding the use of force against force. As a martial art Hapkido is somewhere between technical "soft" aikido and "Hard" techniques of taekwondo, although even with "hard" techniques more emphasis is on the scene in a circular motion rather than linear. Some schools teach different techniques slightly different but the core technology found in all schools and must follow the principles of Basic Hapkido, which are: non-resistance or Hwa Won and Circular Motion and the principle of water or Ryu.
Hwa, ways to stay relaxed and not to oppose direct force of the enemy rather use his own strength against him for the imbalance. Won, is the principle of the circle shows you how to gain momentum and execute a smooth technical style. An example shows that as the person is, the more energy a person has, the better for the student and Ryu Hapkido is the principle of water, the thought of soft, adaptable strength of water. In Hapkido you do not rely on physical strength alone. Hapkido student must learn to divert strike an opponent in a gentle way like water in a stream being divided by a rock, then join once around. The basic techniques consist of two techniques for controlling mild or strong throws and municipalities which have been drawn from Aikijujutsu. Most techniques in Hapkido work with a combination of unbalancing the attacker and applying pressure to certain points on the body. Hapkido uses over 700 pressure points in the body for total efficiency.

Hapkido training is suitable for all ages, adults down to young children. For children under 12, a modified form is taught. No weapons may be used and all joint locking techniques have been removed class for these young children and single shots are for self defense and the fight against bullying.
